The VQ35DE and VQ35HR are both 3.5L DOHC V6 engines from Nissan and Infiniti, but they are not the same. The HR is a later, more powerful revision with a higher-revving design and revised cylinder head. The DE itself has two sub-versions: non-Rev-Up and Rev-Up. None of these are directly interchangeable with each other.

VQ35DE Overview

The VQ35DE debuted in 2002 in the Infiniti G35 Coupe, G35 Sedan, and the Nissan 350Z. It is a 3.5L DOHC V6 with continuous variable valve timing control (CVTC) on the intake cams.

There are two distinct generations of the DE:

Non-Rev-Up (2002 to 2004):

  • 260 hp in the 350Z and G35 Coupe
  • Redline around 6,600 RPM
  • CVTC on intake cams only
  • Found in the earliest G35 and 350Z models

Rev-Up (2005 to 2006):

  • 298 to 300 hp depending on application
  • Redline raised to approximately 7,500 RPM
  • Adds dual CVTC: continuous variable valve timing on both intake AND exhaust cams
  • Different intake manifold, exhaust cams, and ECU calibration
  • Do not mix Rev-Up and non-Rev-Up components. The exhaust cams are not interchangeable between these two versions.

The "Rev-Up" name refers to the higher-revving capability of this updated version. It arrived in 2005 model year 350Z and select G35 applications.

VQ35HR Overview

HR stands for High Revolution. It replaced the DE starting with the 2007 model year.

Key changes from DE to HR:

  • Redesigned cylinder heads with revised combustion chambers
  • Higher compression ratio: 10.6:1 versus 10.3:1 on the DE
  • 306 hp in the 350Z HR and G35
  • Revised intake manifold for improved airflow

Reliability and Common Problems

The VQ35 family is generally well-regarded. The 350Z and G35 community has logged a lot of miles on these engines. Here is an honest look at the issues that come up.

VQ35DE common issues:

  • Oil consumption is a known concern, especially past 80,000 to 100,000 miles. Check the oil level regularly.
  • Timing chain tensioners wear over time. A ticking rattle on cold starts is the early warning sign.
  • Upper radiator hoses can fail on higher-mileage units. Worth inspecting on any used purchase.
  • Head gaskets are reliable under normal use but can fail if the engine has been overheated.

VQ35HR common issues:

  • Generally tighter machining tolerances than the DE
  • Some oil consumption tendencies at high mileage, similar to the DE
  • Timing chain tensioners are improved over the DE design but not immune to wear
  • Less common in the used market, so prices tend to be higher when you find one

Both engines respond well to regular maintenance. Using quality 5W-30 oil and sticking to change intervals is the single biggest factor in VQ longevity.

Which Fits My G35 or 350Z?

Fitment matters a lot here. The DE and HR are not drop-in replacements for each other.

If you have a 2002 to 2006 G35 or 350Z with a DE:
Replace with a matching DE. Non-Rev-Up for a non-Rev-Up car, Rev-Up for a Rev-Up car. Swapping Rev-Up parts into a non-Rev-Up application (or the reverse) requires ECU, exhaust cam, and sensor changes. Doable for a dedicated build, but not a simple swap.

If you have a 2007 to 2008 G35 or 350Z HR:
Replace with an HR. Dropping a DE into an HR chassis requires significant modifications to work properly.

Swapping an HR into a DE car:
Technically possible and some enthusiasts have done it for the power increase. The HR has a different oil pan, different head dimensions in critical areas, and needs an HR ECU. What is a Rev-Up VQ35DE?

The Rev-Up is the 2005 to 2006 updated version of the VQ35DE.
